PhilBoxing.com Tue, 03 Sep 2024
The RP Blu Girls closed their campaign in the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup 2024 with a solid performance, securing fifth place in Group C with a 4-0 victory over Ireland.
Philippines’ starter Callie Christian was the star of the game, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six batters. Christian, who finished the tournament with an impressive 2.63 ERA, also shone at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Mylia Perez added two hits in three at-bats and scored twice, contributing to the team’s strong offensive showing. Ireland’s lone hit came from shortstop Cameron Kelly, who ended her tournament with a .235 batting average. With this win, the Philippines secured fifth place in their bracket, while Ireland finished sixth without a single win in the competition.
Reflecting on the team's performance, ASAPHIL President and Cebuana Lhuillier CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier expressed his pride in the Blu Girls.
“I am incredibly proud of our girls for their determination and hard work throughout the tournament. They played with hearts and displayed the exceptional talent that Philippine softball has to offer,” Lhuillier said. “We will be with the girls every step of the way as they prepare for the next World Cup. This experience will only make them stronger and make them grow, as they’ll definitely be back hungry for more.”
As the tournament ends its run, eight teams have secured their spots in the 2025 Finals. The USA and Canada, who finished first and second respectively in Group C, will be joined by Japan, Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei, Mexico, Czechia, and China. The Finals will see representation from the top teams across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, setting the stage for a highly competitive event slated in 2025.-Marlon Bernardino -
