RP Blu Girls Defeat Ireland; Give Mexico a Hard Time

PhilBoxing.com

The RP Blu Girls showed their immense fighting spirit by heading into a double header battle this morning, ending with a win against Ireland, 5-2 at the WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup Group C. The team first faced off against Mexico in the morning, where they fell 6-4 in a nail-biting nine-inning battle. Despite the setback, the Philippines rebounded strongly in the afternoon, securing a much-deserved victory against Ireland.

Against Mexico, the Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Blu Girls battled fiercely, taking the game into extra innings after a late RBI single from Mexico’s Karina Rodriguez tied the game in the seventh. Mexico ultimately pulled ahead in the ninth, capitalizing on a defensive error to score two crucial runs. Despite a strong performance by the Blu Girls, including a two-RBI single by Erica Arnaiz that briefly gave them the lead, Mexico’s efforts proved decisive in the end.

That did not dampen the spirits of the Blu Girls as they headed for their second game against Ireland. Althea Palzario delivered a complete game performance on the mound, striking out ten batters and allowing just two runs over seven innings. A pivotal moment came in the bottom of the third when Jiyah Caban turned a sharp line drive into an inning-ending double play, thwarting a potential big inning for Ireland.

The Philippines took control in the fifth inning with timely hits that expanded their lead to three runs, which they held onto for the win.

ASAPHIL President and Cebuana Lhuillier CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier praised the team's efforts and potential, stating, "I know these girls have the potential to go toe to toe against the best of the best, and they proved it again with their performance today."

With this victory, the Philippines improved to a 1-2 record in the standings and will next face Canada. Meanwhile, the USA, who dominated their match against Australia 10-0, will be the next major challenge for the Philippines in another doubleheader scheduled for Friday.-Marlon Bernardino -
