2024 PARIS OLYMPICS 7: CARLOS YULO WINS OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sun, 04 Aug 2024 Carlos Yulo became only the second Filipino athlete to become an Olympic champion after he won the gold medal in the artistic gymnastics men's floor exercises on Saturday in Paris. His victory earned the Philippines' first medal at the Paris Olympic Games and he also became the first Filipino gymnast to achieve an Olympic podium finish. Yulo's feat followed three years after weightlifting sensation Hidilyn Diaz made Philippine sports history by winning the country's first Olympic gold medal. Yulo tallied 15.000 points as the third gymnast competing in his favorite apparatus. He earned a difficulty score of 6.600, the highest score of the event, and executed it superbly with an 8.400, and an excellent total score of 15.000. “I’m so overwhelmed. I’m feeling grateful for having this medal and for God. He protected me, as always,” said Yulo. “He gave me the strength to get through this kind of performance and perform this well.” Artem Dolgopyat of Israel, the defending champion of the event, won the silver while Great Britain’s Jake Jarman, a half-Filipino, finished with a bronze. Yulo will again give the Filipino fans more excitement when he competes for another medal in the vault final today. * * * Overcoming a weak start, pole vaulter EJ Obiena recovered and passed the qualification round and earned a finals berth in the men's pole vault. Obiena failed to clear the bar at 5.60 meters in his first two attempts. But he got better by clearing both the 5.70 and 5.75 meter marks in just one jump, and finished 7th spot out of the 12 qualifiers. Sweden's Armand Duplantis, the world's number one pole vaulter, finished in first place. * * * Carlo Paalam's goal of equaling or surpassing a silver medal finish three years ago failed in the men's 57kg category, after he lost to Australia's Charlie Senior via split decision in the quarterfinals. The first two rounds saw an equal fight for the two boxers with two judges favoring them for the first and second rounds. However, in the decisive final round, the remaining judge scored for the Australian and denied Paalam of the victory. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. |
