Reyes sweeps Masikhay tilt

Chester Neil Reyes of Rodriguez, Rizal swept his assignments to score 7.0 points to rule the just concluded 1st PMA Masikhay Open Rapid Chess Tournament held at the 3rd level Wellness Space, SM City BF Parañaque last Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Reyes opened his campaign with a win over Evan Meneses then followed it with victories over Marlon Aurellano Balbaboco Jr., AIM Cyrus Vladimir Francisco, Godfrey Villamor, FM Christian Mark Daluz, FM Alekhine Nouri and Philip Octaviano.
His run was a testament of his mastery in the King's Indian Defense Opening.

Reyes received the P10,000 cash prize plus plaque trophy and a gold medal for his efforts in this 1-day rapid tournament, organized by PMA Masikhay Class of 1999, in close cooperation wiith SM City BF Parañaque, IIEE and Bayanihan Chess Club.
"I am happy for winning the 1st PMA Masikhay Open Rapid Chess Tournament. I wish that my luck would remain the same in my next tournament," said the the 19-year-old Reyes, a 2nd year College Student taking up College of Information and Computing Sciences at University of Santo Tomas.

Grandmaster Darwin Laylo of Tondo, Manila defeated Kevin Arquero of Pasay City in the last round to finish second with 6.5 points. The University of Santo Tomas chess team coach had six wins and one draw and pocketed P7,000 plus a silver medal.

Mark Gerald Reyes of Rodriguez, Rizal, Melito Ocsan Jr. of Makati City and AIM Cyrus Vladimir Francisco of Pasig City finished with identical 6.0 points.

However, after the tie break points were applied, Mark Gerald wound up third, Ocsan settle fourth and Francisco finished fifth to pocketed P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000 and a medals, respectively.
Rounding up to the top 15 who got P1,000 each are Nouri, Octaviano of, Lee Roi Palma, NM Romeo Alcodia, IM Ronald Dableo, Arquero, Nelson Busa Jr., IM Barlo Nadera, Villamor and NM Angele Tenshi Biete.

Chess Wizard Marco Piolo Sanido won the top kiddie award while IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad took the top senior and Atty. Rodolfo Enrique "Rudy" Rivera took the top PWD category.-Marlon Bernardino-
