2024 PARIS OLYMPICS 4: NESTHY PETECIO AND CARLO PAALAM ADVANCE WHILE EUMIR MARCIAL AND HERGIE BACYADAN LOSE

PhilBoxing.com

Nesthy Petecio won over India's Jaismine Lamboria in the women's 57kg preliminaries round of 32 boxing match during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the North Paris Arena, in Villepinte on Tuesday. Petecio joined Aira Villegas as the second Filipina boxer to advance to the next round.

Petecio, a silver medalist in the Tokyo Games, won by unanimous decision in all five judges' scorecards when she dominated an opponent who is younger and taller than her. She will next fight on August 2 against French Amina Zidani in the round-of-16.

Carlo Paalam was too much for his foe and did enough punching to capture a unanimous decision victory over Ireland’s Jude Gallagher in the men’s boxing 57-kilogram division.

Paalam used his speed against the taller Irishman who was also quick on his footwork. But the Bukidnon native landed the stronger shots and stole the victory. Paalam will next fight fourth seed Charlie Senior of Australia as they battle on Saturday, August 3, for a semifinals berth.

Eumir Marcial will be going home empty handed from the Paris Olympics. He lost a unanimous decision to Uzbekistan's Turabek Khabibullaev in the round-of-16 of the men's 80kg division, Wednesday.

It was a shocking defeat for Marcial, who was trying to improve the bronze medal finish in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. But the younger and taller Khabibullaev proved to be smarter as Marcial had a hard time to evade the Uzbek's stinging jabs.

All judges gave the first round to Khabibullaev. Marcial won just one of the five judges' scorecards in the second round, as became aggressive in the third round and got the win in three scorecards, but it was too late as Khabibullaev was way ahead to seize the victory.

Hergie Bacyadan bowed to Chinese Li Qian in the women’s 75-kilogram round of 16 on Wednesday, becoming the second Filipino boxer to be eliminated in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Li, a two-time Olympic medalist, utilized her jabs to her advantage and had the upper hand during their fierce exchanges, scoring a unanimous decision win to stay in contention for a gold medal at North Paris Arena.
