2024 PARIS OLYMPICS 1: HERGIE BACYADAN FACES WORLD CHAMPION LI QIAN IN FIRST BOUT

 Bacyadan.
Olympic debutante Hergie Bacyadan will be hurdling a tougher challenge in her first bout in the Paris Olympics 2024 women’s boxing tournament 75kg category. She will have an uphill battle because her first opponent is China’s Li Qian.
The Chinese foe was an Olympic medalist as she won a bronze in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Games and a silver in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She was also the gold medal winner in the 2018 Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi and the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
Compared to Bacyadan, Li is already a seasoned veteran. But if Bacyadan scores an upset, she has to win only one more time to be assured of a bronze finish for Philippine boxing team.
Meanwhile, Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial drew byes into the Round of 16. Paalam, will face Ireland’s Jude Gallagher in his first bout in the men’s 52kg category.
Marcial will be seeking revenge in his first match in the 57kg category when he fights Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak, the boxer who defeated him and relegated him for bronze medal in Tokyo, three years ago.
Like Bacyadan, Paalam and Marcial has to win two bouts in order to be assured of at least a bronze medal.
However, Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio need to win three matches for a podium finish.
Villegas will battle with Moroccan opponent Yasmine Mouttaki in the women’s 50kg class while Petecio trades punches with India’s Jaismine Lamboria in the women’s 57kg category.
Villegas will be the first boxer to fight for Pilipinas boxing team as she is scheduled to fight on Monday.
