Manila---Grandmaster elect and International Master Daniel Quizon will spearhead a strong cast clashing in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Grand Finals of Tournament of Champions (face to face, over the board) set July 19, 20 and 21 at the South Wing Atrium, Greenhills Mall in San Juan City.
The 19-year-old Quizon, who captured the crown of the Philippine National Chess Championship at the Marikina Community Convention Center in Marikina City last January 7, looms as the player to beat in the Round Robin tournament owing to his current achievement.

Quizon, one of the top players of Dasmariñas Chess Academy under the guidance of mayor Jenny Barzaga, Coun. Kiko Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas is fresh from winning the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Rapid Chess Tournament at the AYA Hotel and Residences in Clarin, Misamis Occidental last July 10.
" I hope to do well in this event," said Quizon, who is scheduled to represent the country in the 45th Chess Olympiad to be held on September 10 to 23 in Budapest, Hungary.

Quizon needed to raise his live standard rating of 2460 to 2500 to complete his GM title status.

No less than PCAP Chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua, PCAP President-Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria, PCAP treasurer Atty. Arnel Batungbakal, PCAP technical committee head Engr. Jojo Buenaventura, Coach Hubert Estrella and Sportsman Jessie Villasin will grace the opening ceremony on Friday at 8:30am. Press Conference also scheduled at 6pm.

The event, sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) offers a top purse of P80,000.

Other woodpushers vying in the event, sponsored by PCWorx, The Michael Angelo Foundation Inc., and in cooperation with the HubzStar Chess Center and Greenhills Mall are, GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., IMs Joel Banawa, Kim Steven Yap and Chito Garma, FMs Ellan Asuela and Austin Jacob Literatus.

Other notable pawn pushers participating are Kevin Arquero, Omar Bagalacsa, John Philip Gabuco, Virgen Gil Ruaya and Mark Kevin Labog.

The second to third placers will receive P30,000 and P20,000 respectively while the fourth to 12th placers will earn P5,000 each.

"Under tournament rules of the Grandfinals of Tournament of Champions, it will be a Round Robin Format. Each round will be composed of Blitz (5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment) and Rapid (13 minutes plus 2 seconds increment). Blitz will be scored 1 for win, 0.5 for draw and 0 for loss. Rapid will be scored 2 for win, 1.0 for draw and 0 for loss. Highest Total Game Points will win the round and will get 1 Match Points as a score. If the score is tied, then 0.5 will be awarded to each player," explained by Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua.-Marlon Bernardino-
