ENNIS BEATS DOWN AVANESYAN FOR 5TH ROUND TKO WIN IN FRONT OF HIS HOMETOWN FANS

Jaron 'Boots' Ennis of the United States returned triumphantly after a year's absence in front of his hometown fans with a 5th round TKO beatdown win over David Avanesyan of the UK via Russia to successfully defend his IBF welterweight title Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Ennis's superior hand and foot speed were immediately apparent in the opening round setting the pace and controlling the shorter but game Avanesyan. The fight was halted for a couple of minutes after a powerful low blow by Ennis dropped Avanesyan to his knees writhing in pain.

Avanesyan pressed the action in round two, landing looping right hands to Ennis' head. But Ennis countered with a higher volume of punches, targeting both head and body, to secure the round on the scorecards.

The third round saw more of the same as Avanesyan could not fend off a tsunami of punches coming from the Philly native Ennis and by the 4th round Avanesyan has been reduced to a target practice with damages to his head and body were now markedly visible.

Ennis drops Avanesyan with a counter left in the 5th round.

In the fifth round where it was expected for Ennis to put on the finishing touches, Avanesyan surprisingly came out strong in the first half of the round, giving his all, and again scoring with his right until a counter left by Ennis in the middle of a fierce exchange dropped Avanesyan for the first time in the fight. In the ensuing action Ennis put on a show with a punishing pace that battered the hapless Russian but give credit to Avanesyan for finishing the round on his feet.

Upon the advise of the ring physician, seeing Avanesyan not fit to continue, Referee Eric Dali halted the contest before the 6th round for a 5th round TKO victory by Ennis who now improves his unblemished record to 32 wins with 29 stoppages as Avanesyan dropped to 30-5-1, 18KOs.

Compubox numbers showed Ennis's total dominance with a 152 punches connected against Avanesyan's 53.

After the fight Ennis called out pound for pound star Terence Crawford who was previously the undisputed welterweight champion by holding the four major belts - WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF - but the IBF belt was stripped from him for not facing Ennis as his mandatory challenger.
