Manila---Jan Emmanuel Garcia blasted Rodel Jose Juadinez to remain at the helm alongside Wang Sing and Cai Jiu Bing after three rounds in the 17th Philippine Xiangqi Open Tournament dubbed as Thousand Island Cups at the Philippine Xiangqi Federation headquarters, Room 806 Dasma Corporate Center, 321 Dasmarinas St. Binondo, Manila Sunday, July 7.

Garcia, a 28-year-old International Master in Chess showed his vast knowledge of the opening and his superb technique in Xiangqi to ground the 62-year-old Juadinez to improve to three points to keep his grip on the top spot in Group B.

"I hope I can sustain the momentum," said the Ateneo de Manila University chess team program head Garcia, who also beat Chen Xuan Ren and Isaiah Gelua in the first two rounds.
In the chase pack just half point behind with 2.5 points were Willy Cu and Tony Lim.

Meanwhile, Xiangqi Grandmaster Asi Ching took the lead in Group A with 2.0 points in two outings, half point ahead with Jerry Lim, Jackson Hong and Manuel Tan who toted 1.5 points each.

Earlier, Xiangqi Grandmaster Asi Ching and Xiangqi Master Jackson Hong, made the ceremonial moves kicking off the three-day tournament (July 7, July 13, July 14) also graced by Philippine Xiangqi Federation President Wilson Zhou, VP Ben Jen Kwok, VP Tan Peyton, VP Ryan Chua, Former President Johnson Cu and Former President Manuel Tan.

To attract more Filipino participants, Xiangqi Federation President Wilson Zhou announced that the top 3 Filipinos in Group B will receive P10,000, P5,000 and P3,000, respectively.
In case a Filipino player will win 1st and 2nd placers in Group B, they will also earn P500,000 and P100,000, respectively.
In the future event, if Filipino participants win 1st and 2nd placers in Group A, they will take home P1 million and P500,000 in order.

"We offer bigger prizes to attract more Filipino to participate in Xiangqi Open tournament," said Xiangqi Federation President Wilson Zhou.-Marlon Bernardino-
