PhilBoxing.com

Jacob Kamazato (R) poses with promoter Ramon Arellano.

Unbeaten Cruiserweight Jacob Yamazato (3-0, 3 KOs) will be back in action July 25th at the San Jose Fiesta Restaurant in 4 round main event bout in Nashville, Tennessee. The event will be promoted by Ramon Arellano (Arellano Boxing Promotions) who recently signed Yamazato to a promotional agreement. The 23 year old Yamazato who was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana spoke on his future and shares the history behind his Japanese last name.

What age did you begin boxing?

I begin boxing at the age of 14. I didn't have a lot of amateur fights but I have sparred with a lot of top fighters over the years. I'm not down at all about not having a lot of amateur fights. There are a lot of top active fighters right now who didn't have a lot of amateur fights.

What made you decide to get into boxing?

My grandmother actually encouraged me to get into boxing as it kept me from getting into any trouble.

What is the history with regards to your last name?

My grandmother met my grandfather while he was stationed in the marines in Japan. My grandmother´s name is Kiyoko Yamazato. She raised me and made me what I am today. She also taught me a lot about our Japanese culture which I am very proud of. Sadly she passed away about two years ago. We had talked about me changing my name and I have changed my last name in her honor.

How would you describe your boxing style?

The jab is very important to me. I use several variations of the jab. I use the jab to set up my combinations.

Can you speak on your recent promotional signing?

Signing with Ramon Arellano (Arellano Boxing Promotions) was exactly what I have been waiting for and what my career needs. I am very excited about the future and plans that we have discussed.

What would be something you would like to do in boxing in the future?

For now I want to continue to grow, gain experience, and stay active. I had spoken with my grandmother years ago of us going back to Japan. I have never been. I would really like to one day be able to fight there. I have family there and it would be special to box there in front of family.
