Bernil shares top honors in Jalosjos chess tourney

Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte---Noel "Nonoy" Bernil Jr. made the Tanjay City, Negros Oriental proud anew as he shared top honors at the conclusion of the boys’ Under-12 division of the Mayor Seth Frederick "Bullet" P. Jalosjos National Age Group Chess Championships Grand Finals at the Dapitan City Sports Complex, Zambonaga del Norte on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

The 12-year-old chess wizard defeated Jerrick Roose Albert of Bicol in the last round using the white pieces. He finished with 6.0 points on six wins and a loss at the end of the seven round Swiss-system rapid tournament, which attracted players from around the Philippines.

Bernil finished tied on top with Justin Jed Ortillo of Cabuyao City, Laguna, who toppled John Curt Valencia of Dasmariñas City, Cavite. Ortillo however, notched first place after the tiebreak.

“I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in the country joined the tournament," said Bernil, who just graduated in Elementary at the Plaza Central School in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.

"I would like to thank my father (Engr. Noel) and my mother (Mary-Ann) for supporting my participation in the Mayor Seth Frederick "Bullet" P. Jalosjos National Age Group Chess Championships Grand Final,” added, the amiable Nonoy as he is fondly called by his chess friends, the pride of Tanjay City Chess Club.

The young Bernil is the 2023 National Youth and Schools Chess Champion.

Earlier, Dapitan City Mayor Seth Frederick "Bullet" P. Jalosjos and Princess Rane Magallanes made the ceremonial moves kicking off the one-day tournament also graced by Former Dipolog City Vice Mayor Edelburgo "Bebs" Cheng, NCFP Director Engr. Rey Cris Urbiztondo, NCFP CEO Jayson Gonzales, Chief Arbiter IA Reden Cruz and Mam Sendelyn Magallanes.

Other notable winners were Hannah Segara (U-12 Girls), Jaymiel Piel and Tyrhone James Tabernilla (U-18 Boys), Jersey Marticio and Jirah Floravie Cutiyog (U-18 Girls).

Meanwhile action continues when the standard chess competition gets underway on Monday, June 24, 2024.-Marlon Bernardino-
