WBC Presents "Tamaulipas" Belt to Canelo-Munguia on May 4 By Gabriel F. Cordero PhilBoxing.com Fri, 19 Apr 2024 The green and gold belt is the emblem of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the highest recognition for those who step into the ring. So, in recent years, the WBC has focused on developing, creating, and presenting a series of special and unique belts as a trophy that Mexico and the boxing world award to boxers who face each other on the two most representative dates for Mexico: May 5 (The Battle of Puebla) and September 16 (Independence Day). Over the years, the WBC has collaborated with Mexican artisans, transforming the WBC belt into extraordinary pieces of art and splendid cultural representations. For the upcoming fight on May 4 between the Mexican superstar of world boxing, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, and his compatriot, former world champion Jaime Munguia, the winner will receive the “TAMAULIPAS” belt as a prize. On this new occasion, the belt named "Tamaulipas" has been designed and crafted by the family workshop “Haeberli Piel Artesanía Tamaulipeca.” It is made from the beautiful Cuera Tamaulipeca, a typical costume representing this stunning state, with the participation of 10 artisans in its creation. The central plaque, crafted by “Imperio de Metal,” combines various artistic processes with elements from Tamaulipas, a state with a 200-year history. The belt also symbolizes the cycle of life and death, defeat and victory, rebirth and decay, as well as glory and infamy, representing the natural cycle of human existence. The state of Tamaulipas is located in the northwest region of Mexico, bordered to the north by the Rio Grande, which separates it from the United States, and to the east by the Gulf of Mexico. It was in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, that Don Jose Sulaimán, the eternal president of the WBC and one of the greatest leaders in the history of boxing and world sport, was born on May 30, 1931.
