Incoming La Salle student ties for fifth in India chess tilt; earns 1st IM norm plus an outright FIDE Master title

MANILA--- Filipino Jethro Dino Cordero Aquino finished in a tie for fifth place at Sunday's conclusion of the 1st SOA International Grandmasters Chess Festival 2024 # Category 'A' (1900 & Above).

The 19-year-old Aquino, incoming freshman student taking Computer Science at De La Salle University (DLSU) Taft, Manila, finished the ten-round tournament with 7.0 points (six wins, two draws and two loses) to earn his first International Master norm plus an outright FIDE Master title in the competition held at the SOA Campus 2 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4.

Aquino's victories were against AIM Arnav Dabhade of India (round 1), Kundu Kaustuv of India (round 4), CM Vijay Saraogi Vivaan of India (round 7), Jake Shanty of India (round 8), GM Jayson Gonzales of the Philippines (round 9) and GM Adham Fawzy of Egypt (round 10).

He split the points with FM Arjun Adireddy of India (round 2) and IM Saha Neelash of India (round 3).

He was beaten by GM Sayantan Das of India (round 5) and IM Semetei Tologon Tegin of Kyrgyzstan (round 6).

"I would like to dedicate my victory to my countrymen," said the Lucena City, Quezon Province resident Aquino, an online Arena Grandmaster.

GM Sayantan Das of India took the crown with 8.0 points followed by GM Diptayan Ghosh, IMs Sambit Panda and Saha Neelash of India who toted 7.5 points each.

GM Jayson Gonzales and WGM Janelle Mae Frayna of the Philippines scored 6.0 points each to finish No. 26 and No.27, respectively among 96 entries.

Meanwhile, WIM Bernadette Galas (4.5 points) landed at overall 65th place while WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda (4.0 points) finish at 71st place.-Marlon Bernardino-
