MANILA---International Masters Chito Garma, Ricardo de Guzman and Barlo Nadera will return to chess action when the IM Rony and Mam Elvira Roca Invitational Chess Tournament gets underway on February 17, Saturday at the Metro Gate Club House, Metro Gate Subdivision, Dasmariñas City, Cavite.
Game starts at 2pm.
The former University of Manila standout Garma made headlines after winning the 50 plus category of the 2023 Asian Seniors Chess Championships held at the Knights Templar Hotel in Tagaytay City last October 22.
Thus, Garma will represent the country in the 2024 World Seniors Chess Championships later this year in Bucharest, Romania.
"I would like to thank IM Rony and Mam Elvira Roca for hosting a tough chess tournament to celebrate their birthdays," said Garma, who got two (2) grandmaster norms under his belt.
Other invited masters are IMs Angelo Young and Domingo Ramos, FMs Carlos Edgardo Garma and Adrian Ros Pacis and NMs Edmundo Gatus, Romeo Alcodia, Carlo Lorena, Homer Cunanan and youthful Oscar Joseph Cantela.
Tournament director is NM Marlon Bernardino.
The champion will win a cash prize of P10,000, while the runner-up will receive P5,500. The third placer will take home P4,500, as the fourth and fifth placers will each pocket P4,000 and P3,000, respectively. Sixth to 12th placer will pocket P2,500 each.
The 1-day event, backed up by rocafe, offers a total pot prize of P45,000, applying round robin format with a time control of 10 minutes plus 2 seconds increment. (Marlon Bernardino)
