SPORTSCLOPEDIA 11: JERWIN ANCAJAS TO TRAIN AND FIGHT IN THE UNITED STATES

PhilBoxing.com

Former IBF junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas' comeback fight originally planned to be held in the Philippines has been suspended as MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons is eyeing a fight in the United States in the first quarter of 2023 instead.

* * *

Ancajas was supposed to face Thai journeyman Songsaeng Phoyaem on February 12 at the Imus Sports Complex in Cavite, which is near the Survival Camp complex where Ancajas conducts his training.

* * *

Gibbons said he is presently facilitating the team to come back to the United States and let Ancajas undergo intense training together with former WBO world bantamweight champion Marlon Tapales and world super flyweight contender Jade Bornea in Las Vegas.

* * *

The 31-year-old Ancajas (33-3-2, 22 KOs), will be moving up to 118 pounds after back-to-back unanimous decision defeats to Fernando Martinez this year, which saw him lose the IBF junior bantamweight title that he had held since 2016.

* * *

His first loss to Martinez was by a unanimous decision on February 26, 2022 at The Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas, Nevada. The judges saw it 117-111, 118-110 and 118-110. He lost again to Martínez in a rematch on October 8, 2022 at Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California. The scores were 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110.

* * *

Ancajas won the IBF junior bantamweight title on September 3, 2016 when he outpointed McJoe Arroyo by unanimous decision in Taguig City.

* * *

Before losing the title to Martinez, he has defended his IBF junior-bantamweight title nine times against the following :
Chile's Miguel Gonzalez by 6th round TKO Japan's Ryuichi Funai by 6th round TKO
Mexico's Alejandro Santiago by split decision Filipino Jonas Sultan by unanimous decision
Mexico Israel González by 10th round TKO
United Kingdom's Jamie Conlan by 6th round TKO
Japan's Teiru Kinoshita by 7th round TKO
Mexico's José Alfredo Rodríguez by 7th round TKO
Mexico's Jonathan Javier Rodriguez by unanimous decision

When Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962, the basketball world, particularly the NBA, believed it may not see another spectacular achievement like it to happen again.

* * *

After that unbelievable game, the 70-point mark had been surpassed six times and only twice since 1963, since the advancement of the teams' defensive strategies. last was David Robinson’s 71-point output in 1994 against the Los Angeles Clippers and it seemed so hard to reach again.

* * *

Then it happened when Kobe Bryant torched the Toronto Raptors on January 22, 2006 in one of the greatest single game scoring achievements in NBA history. The Lakers scored a 122-104 come-from-behind victory at homecourt and Bryant finished with 81 points on 28-of-46 field goal shooting, including 7-of-13 from 3-point range, and 18-of-20 from the free throw line. Even Bryant himself could not believe his accomplishment.
