Ex-OPBF champ Rolando Aldemir is making a "comeback"

FORMER Orient and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) lightweight champion Rolando Aldemir of Kitaotao, Bukidnon is making a comeback in boxing.

But he will not fight and instead he will be a trainer or coach of a boxer.

“I have young boys, who are good and have potential to become champions,” said the 58-year-old Aldemir, who is now a resident of Buhangin, Davao City.

Aldemir brought 10 boys to a dual meet with the Samal Island two years ago. They fought three times in Samal and six of their players emerged as winners.

Buhangin also played against the Calinan District.

Aldemir and the Buhangin boys were later scattered after the pandemic. They also lost their major sponsor Barangay Captain Jimmy Salvador, who died of cancer.

“We really had to stop due to the pandemic, but now that it is normal again we will make a comeback,” said Aldemir.

But Aldemir’s equipment are now old and dirty.

Aldemir became the OPBF lightweight champion when he beat Dawthong Chuvatana of Thailand by a unanimous decision on March 7, 1983 in Bangkok. He successfully defended it by stopping in the 6th round Hong Kyoo Lim of South Korea on June 16, 1983 in Seoul.

Aldemir then knocked out Australian champion Kirk Blair in the 1st round on August 12, 1983 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

But Aldemir already has a problem with his weight. He was overweight when he fought against Muhammed Juhari on October 16, 1983 in Malang for the second title defense. Aldemir lost by a knockout in the 6th round.

He then climbed the super lightweight division but he lost in two fights against RP super lightweight champion Ruben Rabago of Cebu and RP lightweight champion Jong Jong Pacquing of Cagayan de Oro, both in points.

But he came back by winning four of his five fights and one was a draw.

He then lost to OPBF welterweight champion Jun Suk Hwang by a knockout in the 9th round on July 27, 1986 in Jeonju, South Korea.

Aldemir also tried twice but got lost against Francisco Ferrer of Tarlac for the RP welterweight title in 1990 (unanimous decision) and 1991 (9th round TKO).

Aldemir tasted his last victory against Jun Ramos by a 2nd round knockout on October 5, 1991. He also fought but lost to American Danny Trevo by a 1st round on September 25, 1996.

At 35 years-old, Aldemir tried to make a comeback but he lost to former RP middleweight champion Noli De Guia by a 4th round on May 13, 1999 at the Almendras Gym in Davao City.
