JOE NOYNAY DEFENDS WBO ASIA-PAC BELT AGAINST LIAM WILSON IN NEWCASTLE

PhilBoxing.com

Noynay (R) and Wilson.

Cebu City -- WBO Asia-Pacific super featherweight champion Joe Noynay will defend his belt against Australian undefeated prospect Liam Wilson in the co-main event of the Tim Tszyu vs Steve Spark WBO Global super welterweight showdown on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at the Newcastle Entertainment Center in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Noynay (18-2-2, 7KOs) of Bogo, Cebu, the birth place of Filipino boxing legend Gabriel 'Flash' Elorde, and is managed by Elorde's son Bebot Elorde, last saw action on Dec. 7, 2019 in Tokyo, Japan when retained his belt with a technical draw against Japanese Kenichi Ogawa in a headbutt infested fight.

As the pandemic hit the globe, Noynay was sidelined since and will be seeing action again after 19 months of absence. He will be the first foreigner to fight inside Australia outside of neighboring New Zealanders.

His opponent, Liam Wilson (9-0-0, 6KOs) of Caboolture in Queensland, tells a different story. After his fight on Dec. 18, 2019 against Mauro Alex Hasan Perouene, he fought four times during the pandemic, the last one a 10-round unanimous decision victory against highly regarded Francis Chua on April 21, 2021 in Wollongong.

The momentum is definitely in favor of the Aussie and Noynay has to dig deep in his bag of experience to ward off defeat.

Wilson however has only good words for Noynay. "He's crafty - a very good boxer and technically very sound," Wilson said. "It's going to be a good boxing match - I'm excited for the boxing part of it. His style will allow me to showcase my skills and put on a good performance," said the highly confident Australian who will be fighting for his first regional belt.

The highly anticipated fight card was in danger of being scrapped when Tim Tszyu's original opponent Michael Zerafa withdrew a week before the fight citing the Covid outbreak in Sydney and he and his team refused to fly to Newcastle (120 kilometers north of Sydney) from Victoria. It took the gutsy Stevie Spark (12-1-0, 11KOs) to sub for Zerafa and saved the day.

Noynay, who has just completed his 14-day quarantine in a Sydney hotel, was relieved that the card will push thru.

“If you have a big heart, you come. You come to the fight,” said Noynay as quoted by Fox Sports. “I’m away from my girlfriend, my family, my friends. It’s a big sacrifice. I’ve been alone for two weeks, training. I’m happy to be free.”

Also fighting on the undercard is Boholano and now Australian based Czar Amonsot who will face Sam Ah See in a 8-round welterweight matchup.

The Wednesday card is being promoted by NO Limit Boxing.
