SPORTS SHORTS 119: CHARLY SUAREZ BATTLES PABLITO CANADA JR. IN URDANETA CITY

PhilBoxing.com

Charly Suarez will face a new opponent in Pablito Canada Jr. at the VSP Boxing card which was postponed and transferred to a different venue. His original opponent was Lorence Rosas for a fight in Paniqui, Tarlac on April 24. But the event, a six-round super featherweight bout, will now be held in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan today, May 1.

Suarez, a former Rio de Janeiro Olympian and a three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, is a heavy favorite to dominate Canada as the former amateur standout is undefeated in his five professional career bouts with four knockouts.

* * *

Canada, on the other hand, had an inferior 7-18-4, 1 KO record, and one of his defeats was dealt by Rosas via unanimous decision. Canada was originally scheduled to face Jon Jon Estrada (11-8-1, 10 KOs) on the same card dubbed “A Warrior’s Call”.

Suarez, age 32 years of Sawata, Davao del Norte is coming off a very convincing 10-round unanimous decision win over Estrada on February 13 at the Mega Mart Burgos Poblacion Norte, Paniqui, Tarlac. The judges' scores are 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91.

* * *

Richard Pumicpic (21-11-2, 6 KOs) clashes with Landy Cris Leon (13-21-5, 6 KOs) in the main supporting bout.

* * *

In another super featherweight duel, Arnel Baconaje (11-4, 9 KOs) takes on Jay Lloyd Quidlat (4-1-2, 2 KOs) as both fighters aim to come back from their respective previous losses.

* * *

In the undercard, Lorenz Ladrada (8-1-1, 2 KOs) locks horns with Marklin Itim (2-4), Roy Sumugat (10-11-1, 4 KOs) trades punches with Eljohn Evangilista (4-3, 1 KO), Jover Amistoso (1-0) brawls with Noli James Maquilan on his pro debut, and Franco Serafica (4-1, 2 KOs) rumbles with Mark Anthony Rotilles (2-6, 1 KO).

* * *

Canada looks like a smooth sailing tune-up fight for Suarez, who has an awesome track record so far as a pro boxer. Canada lost two of his last three fights and has been inactive since losing to Ryoskuke Nishida by unanimous decision last December 22, 2019.

* * *

Suarez is successful amateur fighter, as he won the gold medals in the 2009 Vientiane SEA Games as a featherweight and the 2011 Jakarta SEAG as a lightweight and was a silver medalist in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. He grabbed his third SEAG gold in 2019 in Manila when he was already a professional.

VSP Boxing promotions in Vietnam signed Suarez and his debut as a pro was a 2nd round TKO over Ernesto Cagampang on January 16, 2019. He then won against Justin Cabarles, Virgil Puton, Dave Barlas all by TKO and Jon Jon Estrada by unanimous decision.

Suarez fought for the Milan-based Italia Thunder in the World Series of Boxing and faced the best international boxers. He boxed five rounds against Vasyl Lomachenko at the World Series of Boxing on February 8, 2013 at the Ice Palace "Terminal", Brovari, Ukraine.

“I was asked to fight Loma on three days’ notice and I declined. I had injured my shoulder, and was not able to raise my arm. I was told that they could not replace me, so I accepted the match and decided to do my best," reminisced Suarez.

* * *

"I made a plan to counter his counter, as it was very hard for me to attack and maintain a strong defense," Suarez said.

* * *

He said he only trained for 5 days, lost weight, got down, and fought Lomachenko. Then his coach told him, "Charly, after 3 rounds, we stop the fight". But during the fight he said he can do it until the fifth round because that was a championship fight, as told to Rappler.

* * *

Suarez gave a tough fight, and rose off from the canvas after a knockdown in the third round and survived up to the final bell. Suarez lost by unanimous decision, 50-44 on all 3 judges' scorecards but won the admiration from the fans.

* * *

Suarez said he received several offers to turn pro, including from Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. He had to decline from the deals because of his shoulder injuries. He rested for almost a year and a half, then he returned to action in July 2014 to win a silver medal at the President Cup in Kazakhstan.

* * *

“I would love to fight Loma again. He is really a smart boxer, but I know that I have improved so much since we last met in the ring, the outcome would be very different.”

* * *

He wants to face the biggest names in boxing, including Leo Santa Cruz, Tevin Farmer, and even Gervonta Davis.

* * *

Suarez competed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics but he lost a split decision to England’s Joe Cordina. He failed to qualify for the Tokyo Sumner Games because the IOC Boxing Task Force cancelled the Olympic Qualifying Tournament which would have been held in Paris in June due to the rising covid cases.

He is now the youngest player in league history to score at least 50 points with 10 assists, passing James who achieved it when he was 23.
