Rising Puerto Rican star Edgar Berlanga failed to sustain his streak of first round knockout wins but nevertheless scored four knockdowns en route an 8-round unanimous decision victory over Demond Nicholson at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) in a Top Rank card televised live by ESPN. Judges had Berlanga overwhelmingly ahead in the scorecards at 79-68, 79-69 and 79-69.
Fighting in front of a capacity and mostly Puerto Rican crowd, the heavy handed Berlanga dropped Nicholson once in the second, third, fifth and in the closing seconds of 8th and last round where Nicholson appeared to be badly hurt but was able to stand up and beat the count as the final bell rang right after.
Berlanga now improved his undefeated super middleweight record to 17 wins, 16 knockouts while Nicholson, from Maryland, USA, absorbed his 4th loss for 23-4-1, 20KOs record.
Berlanga (R) and Nicholson squares off in Kissimmee, Florida Saturday night, April 24, 2021.
