SPENCE-GARCIA PRELIMINARY RESULTS: AVELAR, MEILNICKI, DELGAGO NOTCH WINS

PhilBoxing.com

Avelar (L) comes at Lukas.

Below are the results of the Off-PPV preliminary fights on the undercard of the Errol Spence Jnr vs Danny Garcia at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).

In a 10-round featherweight bout, Isaac Avelar of Aguascalientes, Mexico rebounded from his loses in his last two fights by outboxing and outpoing erstwhile undefeated Sakaria Lukas of Windhoek, Namibia. Judges Robert Chapa, David Jacobucci and Javier Martinez all had it 98-92 in favor of Avelar.

Throwing more punches and connecting more, Avelar piled up points round after round. Lukas rallied in round five and six connecting a series of hard rights at Avelar but the Mexican adjusted well and regained the tempo going into the remainder of the rounds.

Avelar now improves to 17-2-0, 10KOs while Lukas, fighting for the first time in the U.S., absorbed his first loss and dropped to 23-1-0, 16KOs.

2nd Fight: 6 rounds welterweight
18-year-old undefeated prospect Vito Meilnicki of New Jersey dropped Steven Pulluaim, 30, once in round two en route to a dominant 6-round unanimous decision. All three judges, Javier Alvarez, David Jacobucci and Javier Martinez, gave all the rounds to Meilnicki, 60-52.

Meilnicki improved to 7 wins with 4 stoppages while Pulluaim dropped to 5-4-0, 1KO.

Opening fight: 6 rounds super middleweight
Marco Delgado (7-1-0, 5KOs) of Turlock, CA won by split decision over Burly Brooks (6-1-0, 5KOs) of Dallas, TX who came into the fight with an undefeated record. Judges' scores: Javier Alvarez 57-55 for Brooks while Don Griffin and Javier Martinez had it 59-53 for Delgado.

Delgado, 29, appeared to have dominated the fight landing solid punches to the head and body of Brooks throughout. Brooks, 21, who is a stablemate of Errol Spence Jnr, could not capitalize on his height and reach advantage. Additionally he was deducted two points, one in round five and one in round six, by Referee Neal Young for low blows.
