HANEY DOMINATES GAMBOA TO KEEP WBC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sun, 08 Nov 2020 It was a case of a younger fighter running circles over his veteran opponent as Devin Haney retained his WBC lightweight title by outboxing and outpointing former unified champion Yuriorkis Gamboa at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida televised on DAZN Saturday night (Sunday in Manila). Judges scores: Fernando Barbosa 118 109, Mike Ross 120 107, and Michael Tate 120 - 107 all in favor of Haney. Haney, 21, who has a 2.5 inches height and 8 inches reach advantage over Gamboa, used it to the hilt to shut out Gamboa on the two judges' scorecards by connecting with stiff jabs and wicked rights to the head and body of Gamboa all night. But his promise to make a statement by having a sensational performance did not come to pass as the battle-hardened Gamboa took the punishment quite well including a last-ditch effort by Haney in the final round throwing everything to stop his opponent. Devin Haney connects with a left at Yuriorkis Gamboa during their WBC world title fight at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020. "He was a crafty fighter," Haney said after the fight. "He did not come to win but to survive." Gamboa was warned several times by Referee Telis Assimenios for excessive holding that culminated in a point deduction in the 11th round. Haney upped his undefeated record to 25 wins, 15KOs while Gamboa, who be 39 years old next month, absrobed his 4th defeat and dropped to 30-4-0, 18KOs.
