Jaime Munguía Stops Johnson; Elwin Soto Retains WBO 108 in Indio, California

PhilBoxing.com

Mexican middleweight slugger Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KO's) of Tijuana, Baja California, scored a 6th round stoppage win over game Bahamas veteran Tureano Johnson tonight in the Golden Boy Promotions at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, retaining his regional WBO Intercontinental belt, as well as his WBO #1 middleweight ranking.

Taking control of actions, a crushing big right uppercut thrown by the Mexican in round 5 opened a bad cut on Johnson's upper lip, prompting veteran referee Raul Caiz Sr., to check with the doctor and stop the battle.

Johnson was already taking punishment and had already another cut on his left eye.

The win was a good stepping-stone victory for the unbeaten 6 foot former super welterweight champion trained in his native Tijuana by none other that legendary Mexican warrior Erik "El Terrible" Morales.

Munguia connects with a right at Johnson.

Now the hard-swinging 24-year-old Jaime Munguía wants to battle any of the toughest names in the middleweight division such as Kazakhstan’s “GGG” Gennady Golovkin, Demetrius Andrade, Jermell Charlo, Ryota Murata, or even fellow Mexican Canelo Álvarez.

Fans of Munguía just can wait to find out who will he fight next.

In the show’s co-feature, Mexican WBO 108 lbs. world champion Elwin "La Pulga" Soto (18-1, 12 KO’s) outclassed experienced Nicaraguan challenger Carlos "Chocorroncito" Buitrago for a successful 2nd world title defence.

Elwin Soto (L) and Carlos Buitrago (R) duke it out for 12 rounds.

After the 12 rounds of action, scores were unanimous for the 23-year-old Elwin “La Pulga” Soto of San Felipe, Baja, California, still the WBO light flyweight world champion.

Boxing fans in the Philippines now hope that Elwin Soto’s next defense could be against unbeaten Pinoy warrior Mark “Thunder” Vicelles (12-0-1, 6 KO’s) of Sultan Kudarat. Time will tell.

Training at the Omega Gym in Cebu, the southpaw Vicelles is currently WBO #12.
