LIPINETS vs CLAYTON IBF WELTER ELIMINATOR ENDS IN DRAW

PhilBoxing.com

Clayton connects his jab at Lipinets.

In a war of attrition with Russian Sergey Lipinets coming forward targeting mostly the body and Canadian Custio Clayton moving backwards countering effectively, two of the three judges got the fight even after twelve rounds as the IBF welterweight eliminator ended in a majority draw in the PBC main event televised on Showtime at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT Saturday night (Sunday in Manila). Judges Glenn Feldman and Tom Schreck had 114-114 even while Don Trella gave the edge to Clayton 115-113.

Clayton connected more jabs against Lipinets, 135 to 68 while the Russian connected more body shots 80 to 29 with power shots about even 112 to 107 in favor of Clayton.

Lipinets (L) targets the body of Clayton.

Lipinets, the former IBF 140 lbs titleholder who moved up to the talent-laded welterweight division after losing the title to Mikey Garcia in March 2018, was leading in the judges scorecards but Clayton, fighting his first fight in the United States, closed the gap by taking the championship rounds.

The winner of this fight was supposed to become the mandatory challenger to the winner of the Eroll Spence Jnr vs Danny Garcia IBF/WBC welterweight championship on Dec. 5 but now looks uncertain with the draw.

Lipinets is now 16-1-1, 12 KOs while Clayton remained undefeated at 18-0-1, 12KOs.

Martinez (L) and Marrero in action.

In the main undercard, Xavier Martinez of Sacramento, CA bucked two knockdowns in the eight round to win the WBA super featherweight eliminator bout by outpointing Claudio Marrero of the Dominican Republic. Judges Tom Carusone and John McKaie had it 114-112 while Glenn Feldman had it 115-111 in favor of Martinez.

Martinez remained undefeated and upped his record to 16 wins, 11 KOs while Marrero dropped to 24-5-0, 17KOs.

In the opening TV bout, Subriel Matias (16-1-0, 16KOs) of Puerto Rico stopped Malik Hawkins (18-1-0, 11KOs) of Maryland in the 7th round of their 10-round scheduled super lightweight bout. Matias tallied his 16th consecutive win by stoppage while Hawkins who came into the fight undefeated, suffered his first defeat.
