THE LONG WAIT IS OVER FOR GONZALES, MARAON! PhilBoxing.com Sun, 09 Mar 2008 Featherweight Glenn Gonzales and bantamweight Jundy Maraon, both undefeated boxing prospects from Mindanao who have been signed up by Bob Arum's Top Rank Promotions may have missed the opportunity to display their talents in the Pacquiao-Barrera II and Pacquiao-Marquez II shows because of a delay in the granting of their working visa petition, but now the wait is finally over. The Department of Homeland Security's Citizenship and Immigration Service finally sent notice to the boxers' US-based lawyer Ed Anciano Mar. 5 that the working visa applications of Gonzales, Maraon and their trainer, Noli Pinol, have finally been approved. The approval came a bit late for the two boxers to be able to make it to the Pacquiao-Marquez II card where they were supposed to appear through the efforts of their US boxing advisor, Cameron Dunkin, but it was a welcome development. With the approval of their working visa petition, Gonzales, Maraon and trainer Noli Pinol will now request for an interview schedule with the US Embassy in Manila for the issuance of the necessary visa. News of the approval of the visa request was received with excitement by Top Rank vice president Todd duBoef who had long expected the two boxers from Mindanao to arrive in the US to see action in the Top Rank cards. Nonito Donaire, Sr., father of world flyweight champion Nonito Jr., who will co-train the Braveheart boxers once they arrive in the US, said a series of fights has been scheduled for Gonzales and Maraon in the US. "There is a lot of interest for Filipino boxers in the US now because of the popularity of Manny Pacquiao," said Donaire. Gonzales, a former amateur standout who has a record of 6 wins, 1 draw with 4 KOs, and Maraon, 11 wins, 1 technical draw and 9 KOs, will be the first two of the long list of outstanding boxers from North Cotabato who are set to leave for the US. Those in the waiting list for the US trip are WBO Asia Pacific Youth Bantamweight Champion Glenn Porras (14wins-2losses-6KOs), WBO Asia Pacific Youth Minimumweight Champion Edrin Dapudong (13 wins, 1 loss, 7 KOs) Jr. Featherweight Reynaldo Belandres (7 wins, no loss, 5 KOs), Bantamweight Lorenzo Villanueva (7 wins, no loss, 7 KOs) and bantamweight Rolando Magbanua (7 wins, no loss, 4 KOs). North Cotabato Vice Governor Manny Pinol, who manages the career of the young Mindanao boxers with Chicago-based Rolly Hiso, said there are other young boxers who are now being developed including a 14-year-old Cuban trained high school student who led the North Cotabato amateur boxing team to the championships in a recent tournament in General Santos City. Vice Governor Pinol said Donaire manager, Cameron Dunkin, has been designated as his boxers' advisor in the US to arrange the fights for the Mindanao boys under Top Rank Promotions. |
