Save? Or Saved

PhilBoxing.com

The fight card I was privileged to judge in Mandaluyong City, Philippines last February 13 was presented by a new promotional group named ?Save by the Bell?.

When I got hold of the fight program, I immediately noticed the word ?save? being in the present tense. I thought it was just a typographical error. I also noticed that the banners prominently displayed in the gym premises were also ?Save by the Bell?. I likewise read ?Save by the Bell? printed on the T-shirts worn by the round girls.

I thought they just missed the letter ?d? in the printing until I saw the fights shown on TV where the program was really called ?Save by the Bell?. The group composing ?Save by the Bell? might have a reason or some reasons why the word is ?save? and not ?saved?.

My understanding is that the word should be in the past tense, hence, ?saved? by the bell. This 4-word phrase used to describe how a downed fighter escapes a KO defeat when the referee?s count is interrupted by the bell signaling the end of the round. The rule of most, if not all, boxing bodies as of this writing, however, has been revised where the bell could no longer save a fighter from being counted out in any round. The referee continues the count even after the bell rings ending the round.

The question whether the word should be ?save? or ?saved? does not easily escape my attention this issue being similar to the discussions of the regulars at the www.philboxing.com forum on Philosophy, Religion, Metaphysics, Occult. You are cordially invited to visit the forum at:

While I am for the past tense, ?saved?, in ?saved by the bell?, in the thread topic ?IS SALVATION EARNED?, my position is with the present tense, ?save?, that is, a believer is not yet saved in his present state of being still flesh and blood. The emergence of the ?Save by the Bell? promotions is a welcome development to Philippine boxing. The 3-championship maiden fight card it presented last month was a success the results of which have been reported and may be reread at:

While the fights provided continuous excitement to the rabidly boxing engrossed crowd, no fighter ever needed to be ?save?, or isn?t it ?saved??, by the bell.
