Reymond Yanong To Fight On Top Rank’s July Card

PhilBoxing.com

Reymond Yanong.

For all intents and purposes, boxing has been dead for almost three months until Top Rank Promotions thought of a innovative way to resurrect it albeit without the usual beer-driven delirious fans cheering for the fighters.

Bob Arum’s boys put together a few fights at Las Vegas on ESPN just to assure boxing fans that yes, boxing is still around even under the new normal.

One of the fighters that fortunately found a spot on the fight cards was a little known Filipino fighter who came to the US in search of the proverbial greener pastures. His name is Reymond Yanong (11-5-1,9KO) of Escalante, Negros Occidental.

Yanong’s first fight in the US was on February 28th, 2020 at Sam’s Town Hotel Casino at Las Vegas. It was a baptism of fire. He was literally fed to the lions when they matched him with a fighter who was undefeated, Frank Martin of Indianapolis, Indiana (11-0-0, 9 KO). Martin won as expected, and by TKO. Filipino trainer and promoter, Aljoe Jaro and LA based Greg Asuncion were at Yanong’s corner.

In his second fight, Yanong was given an easier assignment. This time it was at the Bubble at the MGM Grand last June 25, 2020. Yanong was pitted against a fighter that was exactly the opposite of his first US opponent. His name is Clay Burns (9-8-2,4KO) of Fort Worth, Texas. The tattooed brawler was supposed to be a relatively easy fight for Yanong. Besides, Yanong by then has shaken off jetlag and was already fitted with a mouthguard specially designed for him by this writer.

But the fight didn’t turn out as his handlers thought it would. Yanong won the nod of only two of the three judges. The odd judge scored the fight as even and Yanong came away with only a majority decision. But a win is a win and Team Yanong was happy.

The fight with Burns showed some deficiencies in Yanong. His heart was beyond question. And, he was a brave fighter. But, there is a need to work on his stamina to set himself up for 8 and 10 rounders that are on the horizon. Jaro needs to train the kid harder and Asuncion should make sure his nutrition is above far. Knowing both guys however, there is no doubt they recognized the weakness and they will address it accordingly.

The Burns fight was not as great as expected but it still gained the attention of the Top Rank matchmakers and Yanong will soon fight again at the Bubble. The fight will be against Genaro Gamez (9-1-0, 6KO) of San Diego, California on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. Yanong may again be seen on ESPN if things work out well.

Gamez is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Luis Feliciano (14-0-0,8KO) of Rancho Cucamonga, California last August 22, 2019 at Fantasy Springs Casino at Indio, California. Their fight was for the NABF Super lightweight title.

If Yanong performs well at this fight, we may well land more and bigger fights under the aegis of Top Rank.

It is up to Team Yanong to make that happen.
