PETECIO, PAALAM, 2 OTHERS FAIL TO GAIN OLYMPIC SLOTS By Teodoro Medina Reynoso PhilBoxing.com Tue, 10 Mar 2020 World championship winner and Manila SEA Games gold medalist Nesthy Petecio failed to repeat over Japan's Sena Irie while Carlo Paalam still could not solve the style of India's Amit Panghal as they failed in their bids to qualify outright for spots in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. In the quarterfinals of the ongoing Asia Oceania qualifiers at the Prince Hamza Hall in Amman Jordan, two other Filipina fighters Irish Magno and Rita Pasuit fell against their more experienced rivals. Magno lost by lopsided decision to tournament top seed Shih Yu Wi of Chinese Taipei in their scheduled women's flyweight bout while Pasuit likewise was thoroughly outclassed by six time women's world champion and now two time Olympian Mary Kom of India in the women's lightweight quarterfinals. Petecio who has beaten Irie last year en route to winning the world women's championship in the featherweight, just could not get untracked this time as the Japanese proved determined to exact revenge for her last loss to the Filipina and for other Japanese fighters who had lost earlier to Phìlippine bets here. Paalam on the other hand tried his best to finally score a win over the top seed Indian who has beaten him twice before, but could not convince the judges including two who submitted a shut out 30-27 cards for Amit in handing the Indian a 4-1 decision victory. Fight commentators liked Paalam's tight conventional mode of fighting but as in many other cases, the judges preferred the sleek Philly Shell style of Amit which two other qualifiers also used to book their slots in the flyweight division. Jinguang Hu of China and Thitisan Panmod of Thailand shoulder rolled and smartly jabbed their way to dominating wins over Kazakh Saken Bobossinov and Aussie Alex Winwood to get to the semis and gain two of four automatic Olympic berths. Paalam is likely to take on either losers in the boxoff for the final two Olympic slots as Asia Oceania is alloted six regional qualifiers in the division. Magno will also try to gain entry via boxoff while Petecio has had to wait for the final qualifiers to be held in Paris, France later for her last chance. Pasuit joined lightweight James Palicte and featherweight Ian Clark Bautista who were eliminated earlier in the sidelines. Only middleweight Eumir Felix Marcial has a sure slot for the Tokyo Olympics even he tries to improve his record and standing in the tournament which enters semi final stage today in the divisions below the heavy weights. Thailand also falters as featherweight Chatchai Butdee lost by RSC to a Vietnam bet while Jutaimas Jitpong and Wuttichai Masuk also lost yesterday. Panmod and women lightweight Susana Soosandee however advanced In another interesting featherweight quarter finals battle, famous Hongkong pro fighter Rex Tso was defeated by world amateur champion Mirazizbek Mirzhakhalilov of Uzbekistan 5-0 Uzbekistan, China, host Jordan, Kazakhstan, India and Japan have the most numbers of qualifiers in the tournament thus far.
