NBA Daily: Duncan Gets First Win as Acting Head Coach, as Spurs Rally to Beat Hornets 104-103

PhilBoxing.com

Boracay Island, Philippines – Coming off a physically draining home loss the night before and down by 17 huge points in the opening frame, the visibly exhausted San Antonio Spurs rallied to eke out a 104-103 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning, Philippine time) at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dejounte Murray led the way for San Antonio with a game-high 21 points on a 9-for-14 field goal shooting, including 3-for-5 from deep, to go along with 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Spurs leading scorer DeMar DeRozan had a quiet scoring night, but had an efficient double-double of 12 markers and 10 dimes, to go with 5 boards and a steal.

Four other players scored in double figures for the Spurs, who were missing head coach Gregg Popovich, who had to attend to a “personal business”. As a result, Tim Duncan took the cudgels from Popovich to register his first victory as an acting head coach for the Spurs, who improved to 26 wins and 34 losses for 11th place in the Western Conference team standings.

Terry Rozier and PJ Washington had 20 and 19 points, respectively for the Hornets, who were missing leading scorer Devonte Graham due to left ankle soreness. With the loss, Charlotte dropped to a 20-41 win-loss card, which is good for 10th spot in the Eastern Conference team standings.

The Spurs will travel to Brooklyn to face the Nets on Friday night (Saturday morning, Philippine time).

Meanwhile, the Hornets will next host the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night (Friday morning, Philippine time).

How they scored:

Spurs 104 – Murray 21, Forbes 15, Mills 13, DeRozan 12, White 12, Gay 10, Johnson 7, Lyles 6, Walker IV 5, Eubanks 3

Hornets 103 – Rozier 20, Washington 19, Bridges 15, Cody Martin 13, Caleb Martin 12, Zeller 8, Hernangomez 8, McDaniels 6, Chealey 2
