NBA --- Grizzlies clobber Morris Sr and the Knicks, 127-106

PhilBoxing.com

NEW YORK – Notwithstanding a tension-filled endgame, guard Dillon Brooks scored 27 points while Rookie of the Year frontrunner Ja Morant added 18 points and 10 assists as the Memphis Grizzlies whipped the New York Knicks 127-106 on Wednesday at the Madison Square Garden.

With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Memphis forward Jae Crowder stole an inbound pass by Julius Randle and attempted a three-pointer before New York guard Elfrid Payton shoved him into the courtside seats.

A scuffle ensued and in the end, Crowder and the Knicks’ de facto leader Marcus Morris Sr were ejected as they were deemed instigators of the fight. Payton was ejected too as he was assessed a flagrant foul Level 2.

[Update: Crowder was fined $25,000 while Morris Sr was penalized for $35,000 for their respective roles. Payton was suspended for a game while Memphis’ Marko Guduric and Jaren Jackson Jr were suspended as well for leaving the bench.]

The Grizzlies salvaged their fourth win in a row and improved their record to 24-24.

Memphis led at the half 59-52 as Morant closed out with a pair of free throws, and the lead ballooned to twelve as the third quarter ended at 96-84.

At the post-game locker room interview, Morris Sr expressed his emotions. “I think the dude (Crowder) plays the game in a different way. He’s got a lot of female tendencies on the court.”

“Flapping and throwing his head back the entire game. This is a man’s game and you get tired of it.”

The evening was not done as additional drama occurred on the opposite team’s lockers involving Morant. The media was waiting for him when he exited the visitors’ shower room visibly frustrated about the lack of hot water.

“This is beyond me,” he said.

Five other Grizzlies also finished in double figures with Crowder chipping in 18 points, Brandon Clarke with 17 markers, center Jonas Valanciunas had 12 points and 13 boards, guard Tyus Jones contributing 12 and Jaren Jackson Jr adding 10.

Marcus Morris Sr led the Knicks with 17 points and 6 rebounds as they slide further to 13-36.

Memphis went 43-for-86 for 50% field goal conversion while New York had 39-for-91 for 42.9% clip.

The Knicks host Orlando Magic next Thursday, February 6.
