Ladon and Suarez Win but Viet Upsets Marvin

PhilBoxing.com

Charly Suarez (R).

Veteran Charly Suarez registered the first abbreviated victory of the competition by stopping his opponent from Myanmar while teammate Rogen Ladon overcame a spirited challenge from a past gold medalist from Indonesia to advance to the next round of the 30th Southeast Asian Games boxing event being held at the PICC Complex.

However, the team suffered its first casualty as defending light heavyweight champion John Nobel Marvin was upset by a fighter from Vietnam and was eliminated.

The second day of the competition was dominated by fighters from the Vietnamese and Thai men's teams who won all their scheduled bouts, with Vietnam winning four, including the last scheduled match involving Marvin. Thailand won all three scheduled bouts, including one also by referee stop contest right after Suarez's.

Ladon opened the session with a hard earned 4-1 split decision over Indonesian Suguru Ladoms, light flyweight gold medalist in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEAG in their flyweight quarter final match to advance to the semis.

Suarez meanwhile started like a house on fire and attacked Min Arkar Paing from the opening bell hurting his Myanmar foe with powerful combinations in the very first round. The taller, leaner but equally muscular Paing gamely fought on but it was obvious he could not match the strength and work rate of the Filipino.

Charly sustained his attack in the opening minute of the second stanza hurting and staggering Paing with solid shots to the face. He went on to knock Paing down hard twice in that brief sequence, prompting the referee to mercifully stop the contest at 1:14 of the second round.

On the other hand, Marvin started out flat against Troung Dinh Hoang and lost the first round on all scorecards of the judges. He tried to recover in the second round but still it did not convince three of the five judges who still gave the round to the Vietnamese. Marvin finished strongly as Troung simply coasted in the third round which was given to the Filipino. But when scores were added up, Marvin lost by 3-2 split decision.

It was a tough loss for the Fil British who became the picture boy of the country's last campaign in 2017 not only because of his good looks but his first round demolition of his Malay foe in winning the gold in the light heavyweight division of that past competition.

With the defeat, the country advanced only nine fighters out of possible ten to the next round including three from the women's team who won all their opening day bouts including defending light flyweight champion Josie Gabuco .

The tournament semi finals in the men's light flyweight, bantamweight, super welterweight and middleweight divisions will be held starting this afternoon at the PICC Pavillion 2 with Felix Eumir Marcial seeing action for the first time after drawing bye.

Marcial, the defending SEAG middleweight champion and silver medalist in the recent world championship will be going up against Mohammed of Malaysia, gunning for a firsr win on the way to another crack at the gold, potentially his third in as many SEAG competitions.

Also most likely to also see action today are opening day winner light flyweight Carlo Paalam and bantamweight Ian Clark Bautista who drew bye earlier as well as Josie Gabuco and Aira Villegas in the semis of the light flyweight and bantamweight of the women's event.
