PE?ALOSA DARES DE LEON AGAIN

PhilBoxing.com

An elder statesman in a sport for young men, 36-year old Gerry Pe?alosa is almost always diplomatic. He doesn't resort to thrash-talking, and he often speaks about his ring foes in reverential tones.

But when Gerry heard that Daniel Ponce De Leon was dissing him, the Cebuano from San Carlos felt the need to bark back.

"He keeps talking about knocking me out, blah blah, blah. But at the same time, he's been eluding me," Pe?alosa told this reporter in the Filipino during a telephone interview early this week.

Pe?alosa and De Leon fought last March 17, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. The judges gave De Leon the nod, but the prevailing sentiment among both fans and several sportswriters is that Pe?alosa was robbed.

At the very least, Pe?alosa wants a rematch, a chance to once again impose his superior technical skills over the murderous-punching De Leon, a Hungtington, California resident with Mexican roots.

Pe?alosa (52-6 with 35 KOs), the reigning WBO bantamweight champion, is eager to trade blows with De Leon, a 27-year old champ who packs an impressive 34-1 slate spiced with 30 KOs.

But before the Pinoy southpaw can exact a measure of revenge, he must first clear one hurdle: Ratanachai Sor Vorapin, a Thai heavy-hitter who will challenge Penalosa's belt this March 2 at the Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines.

And while Vorapin is deemed as a threat with 48 KOs in 72 wins, ring pundits expect Pe?alosa's experience and ring savvy to carry the day.

Pe?alosa is currently at the Wild Card gym, pouring it all out, as usual, to prepare fro his next foray into the square jungle.

"My training is doing well," he said. "I feel great and I'll fly back to the Philippines this Feb. 18, just in time for my encounter with Vorapin."

Gerry declined to make any predictions in his upcoming battle.

But that's hardly a surprise. He is, after all, a man of few words.
