He also reached the quarter-finals at the 2011 World Championships, losing to Kazakhstan's Serik Sapiyev.

Shawn Porter is a two-time welterweight world champion, having held the WBC title since 2018, and previously the IBF title from 2013 to 2014. Porter is ranked No. 4 welterweight in the world by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and Boxrec and No. 5 by The Ring. He has a professional record of 30-2-1 with 17 KOs. He lost to Keith Thurman by unanimous decision and to Kell Brook by majority decision. He had a split draw with Julio Diaz.

Porter competed mostly in the middleweight division in the amateurs and garnered an impressive record of 276?14. WBA world welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao chose Spence to win in 12 rounds. He was quoted by Boxing Scene: "It's going to be a good fight, a close fight, but I think Spence will win. It's not gonna be one-sided fight, it's gonna be a competitive fight. The fans will be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience in this fight."

Former welterweight unified champion Keith Thurman also favored Spence as he told Boxing Scene: "This is two world champion warriors going at it in a great fight. They have a common opponent in Kell Brook, who beat Shawn Porter and was knocked out by Errol Spence."

Thurman added : "Shawn's gonna come hungry but Brook and I handled that pressure, and I believe that Spence - being a tall southpaw with power and a great jab - will be able to deal with it as well. Spence has the power to stop Shawn, and if he does, I believe that would happen in the later rounds, like he did Brook."
