ARUM AND ROACH WANT PACQUIAO TO RETIRE BUT IF MAYWEATHER REMATCH HAPPENS BOTH PICK MANNY AS THE WINNER

PhilBoxing.com

Manny Pacquiao's former promoter Bob Arum is not amenable to a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and instead advised the Filipino legend to retire from boxing.

The Top Rank boss believes that now is the best time for the famous Filipino pugilist to hang up his gloves after a very impressive victory against the former undefeated WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman last July 20.

Arum promoted Pacquiao for several years, the most of his colorful boxing career. He recommends that Manny would retire while still a winner. But he also stated that Manny "makes his own choices."

The Hall of Fame promoter commends the senator's magnificent performance against Thurman. However, he warns that Manny should "watch himself" because the 87-year-old businessman had "experiences with other, older fighters."

The veteran boxing personality mentioned Mayweather as the boxer he thinks would not cause Pacquiao some serious damages. "Unless he gets to fight Floyd Mayweather in a rematch,? Arum clarified.

In an interview with Fight Hype, Arum, even if he advised Manny to retire, thinks that "Pacquiao would win now" in a rematch with Floyd. He said that if MayPac 2 would happen, "it would be a big, big, big fight" worth to promote.

After his latest win over Thurman, Pacquiao repeatedly announced that he wants a second bout against Mayweather as both very famous boxers were involved in a recent social media squabble.

But Mayweather's team seemed heading the direction towards a possible rematch with Pacquiao. When interviewed during Gervonta Davis and Ricardo Nunez fight in Baltimore, Floyd did not rule out a return and said that "only time will tell" of a possible comeback.

The bewildering message has rekindled new hopes of the possible rematch as fans are contemplating that the undefeated former pound-for-pound king is considering the much sought return fight.

After the cross-combat match against mixed martial arts champion and boxing neophyte Conor McGregor in August 2017, Mayweather again retired from boxing. But he continues to stay in shape by persistently training in the gym. Posting a recent training video on Instagram fueled speculations that he is preparing for the Pacquiao fight.

According to trainer Freddie Roach, Mayweather might have been scared off by Pacquiao's latest vintage performance against the bigger and younger Thurman.

"It would scare me too. I think Manny gave him good reasons to scare him, that was a great Manny fight... much better than when they first fought," Roach said. The Hall of Fame trainer added that Floyd saw Manny's improvement and "Manny is the boss," Roach added.

The father-like coach to PacMan earlier wanted Manny to retire because of the same reason as that of Arum. He doesn't want his favorite trainee to get injured or damaged due to his age. But if the Mayweather fight pushes through, he likes Pacquiao to go for it then hang up his gloves.

Roach commented on ESPN Deportes that the recent exchange of social media posts between the two famous boxers would end up reaching a deal for a return bout next year.

Roach is confident that if a rematch would take place, Pacquiao would give Mayweather his first career loss in 51 fights.

?I?m a trainer. As a trainer, I give Manny much better conditioning, and a much better place than the first fight. I do think that?s a fight that he wants really badly," explained Roach. He added he told Manny, ?If we fight this guy one more time, beat him, and then retire.?

On September 15, 2018, both Mayweather and Pacquiao posted videos on Instagram showing an encounter they had at Ultra Japan, surmising a possible rematch.

Mayweather stated in the posted video that the fight would happen "this year", and reported it as "another 9 figure pay day on the way", and was heard commenting to Pacquiao that he will "take [the belt] from you like I did before".

In Pacquiao's video which was posted with the comment "50-1 #NoExcuses", Mayweather was quoted mentioning the "2nd of December". It was not known if there were any formal negotiations made.

On September 19, 2018, Mayweather clarified his calls for a rematch, stating that he planned to hold a fight in Japan first before any possible rematch.

On November 4, 2018, Mayweather would instead fight undefeated Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year's Eve in a three-round exhibition boxing match. The fight was very lopsided as Nasukawa was knocked down three times in the first round forcing his corner to throw in the towel.

After the victory over Pacquiao, Mayweather recorded 48-0 and reached 50-0 which broke Rocky Marciano's record with triumphs over Andre Berto and McGregor .

Pacquiao meanwhile has won five of his ensuing six fights with his lone defeat inflicted by Jeff Horn two years ago.
