A BULLFIGHTER'S DREAM
By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Wed, 23 Jan 2008

Z ?The Dream? Gorres versus Vic ?Raging Bull? Darchinyan. The contrast in styles is something that every boxing fan has seen before. We know what to expect, we know what they will do. But that doesn?t make this fight any less enjoyable.
The bullring or ?plaza de torros? will be the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu. Gorres of course will play the role of the matador. But unlike a real bullfighter, there will be no picadors and bandilleros to assist him. He will walk into the boxing ring alone to face his most dangerous opponent.
Both fighters need a win. Gorres knows he should be a world titlist by now, if only a year ago the judges paid more attention to the actual fight rather than the round card girls. Darchinyan should still be world champion. The oddsmakers thought so. Nonito Donaire?s fists unfortunately had other ideas.
Gorres (27W ? 2L ? 1D, 15 KO) will be headlining a major international fight card in Cebu for the second year in a row. But the Armenia-born Australian ex-champ?s 79 percent knockout rate (29 W ? 1L, 23 KO) will be a cause for concern. Stamina will play a key role. Darchinyan is not just any bull. He is a wounded beast who is sharpening his horns for another crack at the world title. He will not play a chess game like Fernando Montiel. His punching power makes him a threat in every second in every round. Gorres knows this and his perpetual motion style will make him vulnerable to burn out in the later rounds. The Dream will have to finish stronger this time around.
Ernest Hemingway once wrote that ?Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter?s honor.? The same thing can be said about boxing. Both fighters cannot afford to lose this one. Their careers hang in the balance. Napoleon Bonaparte once said that ?Victory belongs to the most persevering.? This fight promises to be another thrilling battle of wills and the victorious fighter will be the one who manages to persevere and impose his will on the other.
