IBF PLANS INTERIM TITLE FIGHT WHILE CONDES RECOVERS FROM INJURY By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 22 Jan 2008 IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker says the world organization plans to order an interim title fight for the IBF minimum weight crown held by the Philippines Florante Condes while the champion recovers from a wrist and back injury. Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain who has effectively placed Condes under the so-called ?protective custody? of the agency in the wake of a bitter contractual dispute and following an appeal from Condes himself, said he had received a copy of an email sent by Tucker to American co-manager Dante Ortiz regarding the plans of the IBF. Condes reported to the GAB yesterday morning for a medical checkup along with his lawyer, Atty. Edgar Dennis Padernal and his aunt and uncle by marriage, Mr and Ms. Apolinar Valencia with whom Condes now lives after leaving trainer and former junior welterweight champion Morris East. GAB physician Dr. Viernes confirmed the earlier findings of Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Jerry Reyes of the Reyes Orthopedic Clinic in Taytay who diagnosed that Condes suffered from ?severe sprain in right wrist and a left upper back strain.? Dr. Viernes recommended at ?least one month?s rest before Condes can work out in the gym? but suggested that he continue to stay in shape by doing his regular roadwork. The prescription called for Ultrasound, neuromuscular stimulator among, others three times a week. Buhain said ?once the medical report is formalized? he would forward the findings together with a formal request to the IBF for a postponement of Condes?s scheduled title defense against No. 6 ranked Raul ?Raiyto? Garcia in his hometown of La Paz, Mexico on February 16. Buhain told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that he was anticipating the IBF call for an interim title fight because ?they were promoting a fight in Mexico and want that to push through and we will support that.? Buhain added ?for the good of Condes and his belt as the champion and also in consideration of the situation of the IBF and the promoter in Mexico, I think it?s a positive thing. Also as far as our champion is concerned because that way Mexico will be done and maybe there is a possibility of doing the championship fight in the Philippines.
