MORALES, CANOY IN BIG TITLE BOUTS! By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 06 Jan 2008 A Boholano fighter will get the chance to make history as the first Filipino to vie for the WBO Oriental title when Talibon's undefeated Ciso Morales shoots for the vacant WBO Oriental superbantam title on January 29 in Oroquieta City against a soon-to-be-named opponent. This was bared the other day by highly-esteemed Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani, who is putting up the event in anticipation of Morales' upcoming bout underneath the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez rematch. Morales is undefeated in nine fights with six knockouts, although he has yet to be showcased among mainstream Filipino boxing fans. Then on February 23, action shifts to Zamboanga City when the Black Stallion Promotions in coordination with SGG Promotions presents Eric Canoy who will vie for the WBO Oriental featherweight title against Tanzania's Rajabu Maoja. Earlier, Zamboanga Representative Erico Fabian had vowed to make his area the sports tourism capital of Mindanao, and boxing is being tapped to be an initial step into the plans. "These are the first two major events we are planning for early 2008. There are far bigger cards we are putting up for the fans, but we shall announce them later," said Gello-ani. WBO Asia Pacific Chairman Leon Panoncillo, who is credited for the meteoric rise of his organization in Asia, said the Oriental titles are aimed at giving the other promising fighters a chance at the title.
