Young chess phenom Jasper Concepcion Faeldonia inches closer to Singapore chess title

PhilBoxing.com

Singapore--Young chess phenom Jasper Concepcion Faeldonia made short work of 8th seed Zeen Hunn Lim (1381) of Singapore in the seventh and penultimate round to move closer to Singapore chess title on Sunday in the 35th Singapore?s National Age Group Chess Championships at the Kallang Theatre (located within the Singapore Sports Hub) here.

The 14-year-old Faeldonia, a grade 8 student of Arellano University under the watchful eye of National Master Rudy Ibanez and backed up by Odiongan, Romblon mayor Trina Firmalo Fabic finished off Lim in only 36 moves of the London System Opening, sustaining a remarkable winning streak.

The Philippine Age Group Under-14 champion Faeldonia capitalized the mistake of Lim in the opening stage. Then Lim commited a blunder in the 21st moves by giving up his knight allowing the former (Faeldonia) to en route to the win.

Last Saturday, Faeldonia bested second seed Candidate Master Cyrus Nisban (elo 1944) of Singapore in the fifth round then subdued 11th seed Yu Xuan Ashton Lim (elo 1104) of Singapore in the sixth round.

Faeldonia, the No. 4 seed here who has an elo rating of 1693, scored wins over 12th seed Kang Le Clifford Oh (elo 1075) of Singapore in the first round and third seed Sher Hern Leong (elo 1826) of Singapore in the third round.

He split the point with 13th seed Veer Sethi (elo 1018) of India in the second round and top seed Sean Christian Goh (elo 2069) of Singapore in the fourth round.

Going to the final round late Sunday, Faeldonia tallied six points on account of five wins and two draws in the Boys Under-14.

In the Boys Under-10, PH chess wizard Jayson Jacobo Tiburcio bounced back in contention by demolishing Zhan Xun Seth Cheong of Singapore. He has now five points with five wins and two loses. Not to be outdone is Arcege Tan Castillo, a Pinoy based in Singapore who notch 4.5 points.

Arena Grandmaster and Fide Master elect Robert Suelo Jr. help the chess preparation of Faeldonia and Tiburcio and assisted by Filipino and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., Jimson Bitoon and Christopher Diaz.
