JOEY CANOY UPBEAT GOING INTO IBO TITLE FIGHT
By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Sun, 25 Nov 2018

Filipino contender Joey Canoy (14W-3L-1D,7KO?s) will get another shot at an IBO world title belt in South Africa when he challenges Simphiwe Khonco (19W-5L,7KO?s) on December 2 at the Orient Theater in East London.
Khonco won the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) minimumweight title in 2016 by unanimous decision against fellow South African Siyabonga Siyo. He has since defended his title three times, twice against Filipino challengers ? Lito Dante and Toto Landero ? who both lost by unanimous decision.
Canoy was a familiar face in fight cards held in Cebu when he was fighting out of the Flores boxing gym and in boxing cards promoted by Rex ?Wakee? Salud and Naris Singwangcha. Canoy however, is under new management and has relocated his training camp to Mindanao.
Their common opponents are South African Hekkie Budler and Landero.
Canoy lost to Budler in Gauteng, South Africa when his corner signaled that he would not answer the bell for the eighth round. This fight held last February 4,2017 was for the IBO light flyweight world title.
Budler beat Khonco by unanimous decision in 2015 in an IBO/WBA minimumweight title bout.
Khonco beat Landero by unanimous verdict in his latest title defense four months ago. In 2016, Canoy stopped Landero in six rounds in a fight held in Taguig City,Metro Manila.
Canoy?s biggest win happened last year when he beat former world title challenger Melvin Jerusalem by unanimous decision at the IEC Convention Center in Cebu City.
The 25 year old Canoy told this writer that he will be leaving for South Africa on Tuesday. His new manager, Jilson Basang, together with their trainer, will be with him on the trip.
?I am now just doing light training to keep my weight down.? Canoy told this writer, ?I had to go to the Sanman Gym in General Santos because I could not find good sparring partners in Panabo.?
Canoy also feels his luck will change in his second trip to South Africa.
?Paminaw lang nako, pero kaya ra.? He stated. (It?s just a gut feeling but I can beat him.)
