ALVARADO STOPS PETALCORIN IN SEVEN, WINS VACANT IBF WORLD LIGHT FLY TITLE By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Tue, 30 Oct 2018 ![]() Felix Alvarado of Nicaragua came out with guns blazing, landing hard punches to the body and head of Randy Petalcorin, whose strategy seemed to counter with his back to the ropes. Both scored with their shots in the opening round but it was Alvarado who had the obvious edge in volume and power in the first four rounds. Petalcorin, who was fighting on home soil, gamely traded but it was the wrong strategy against a bigger relentless opponent. Alvarado?s plan was obvious, go for the KO and leave nothing for the judges. The dire trend continued in the subsequent rounds, with Alvarado mercilessly pounding Petalcorin?s body. In the seventh round, Petalcorin finally succumbed, and dropped to his knees after being the recipient of a merciless barrage on the ropes. He got up but was beaten up again and was dropped two more times prompting the referee to stop it at the 2:04 mark. Alvarado was awarded the vacant IBF light flyweight title. Petalcorin, from the Sanman gym of gen.Santos City, drops to 29-3-1, 22 Kos. Alvarado improves his fearsome record to 34-2, 30 Kos. His two losses were in world title fights to then WBA light flyweight champ Kazuto Ioka in Japan and in a WBA flyweight title fight to Juan Carlos Reveco in Argentina. The fights were held at the Midas Casino and Hotel in Pasay City. The televised undercards were Gimiel Magramo remaining the WBO Oriental flyweight titleholder by stopping Thai Petchcorchae Kokietgym and Dave Apolinario making it a short night against Joan Imperial.
