JIMENEZ FANCIES ANCAJAS' CHANCES VS. SRISAKET

PhilBoxing.com

WBC world super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (Wisaksil Wangek) of Thailand bulldozed his way to a lopsided unanimous decision win over Mexican challenger Iran Diaz at the Impact Arena in Pak Kret, Thailand.

Srisaket once again applied continuous pressure, cutting the ring off and landing short hard punches to the body and head when he got close. Diaz tried to circle and use his jab but the Thai champ did not have any trouble getting in close.

Diaz was game and engaged at close quarters but Srisaket had the edge in volume and power. Diaz did not have enough pop in his punches to make Srisaket take a back step.

Srisaket did show vulnerability; there was a flash knockdown in the ninth that was ruled a slip, but it didn?t matter in the final scores. In the eleventh, Diaz looked like he was ready to fall but he weathered the onslaught.

The three judges? scorecards read 119-109 twice and 120-108.

This was Diaz?s first world title shot and second fight outside of Mexico. He acquitted himself and lived up to his Mexican pedigree by finishing the fight on his feet. Sor Rungvisai is now 47W-4L-1D,41KO?s while Diaz drops to 14W-3L-3D,6KO?s.

Seated at ringside during the fight and by design caught smiling by the TV cameras was IBF junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas of the Philippines.

Ancajas? trainer Joven Jimenez is also in Thailand and told this writer in a brief chat a couple of hours after the Srisaket-Diaz bout that he thinks Anacajas has a big chance of beating Sor Rungvisai.

?May pag-asa si Jerwin, Mas mahina ngayon,? Jimenez said, ?Negotiate pa namin yung laban.?
(Jerwin has a good chance, He (Srisaket) looks weaker now. But we will still be negotiating the fight.)

This will be a big unification fight if it happens. Sor Rungvisai rose to prominence by beating the highly regarded Roman Gonzalez of Nicaragua last year in Madison Square Garden, New York for the WBC title. That majority decision win in a ring war was followed up by a more convincing fourth round knockout win six months later.

Srisaket would go on to beat another accomplished former champion, Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada by majority decision at the Forum in Inglewood, California last February.

Ancajas (30-1-2,20KO?s) has made six title defenses of the IBF title he won from Puerto Rican McJoe Arroyo but Ancajas? last defense was a draw against the unheralded Mexican Alejandro Santiago Barrios.
