CANELO EDGES GOLOVKIN IN A TORRID AND CLASSIC FIGHT (PHOTOS)

PhilBoxing.com

In a one of the best fights in recent history by two elite warriors, displaying great stamina, heart and sheer determination, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin fought toe to toe in a torrid pace in all twelve rounds giving no inch with many rounds very close. In the end two judges, Dave Morreti of Las Vegas and Steve Weisfeld of New Jersey gave a slight edge to Canelo with 115 to 113 scores while the third judge Glenn Feldman of Connecticut had it a draw, 114-114, allowing Alvarez to take home the WBC, WBA and IBO world middleweight titles with a majority decision win at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night (Sunday in Manila). Philboxing had it 115-113, seven rounds to five, for Canelo.

Unlike in the first fight, this time Canelo did not budge an inch and brought the fight to Golovkin dictating the tempo most of the fights. Canelo came out of gate throwing left hooks and right straights not allowing Golovkin to throw his patented combinations. Canelo connected with a beautiful left uppercut to the chin of Golovkin in round two. Golovkin came back strong in round four and connected with a solid right uppercut and clearly took the round. In the fifth, Canelo was cut in his right eye brow and in round six, GGG had a welt in his eye. The torrid pace continued toward rounds seven, eight and ninth with the two pugilists did not show any sign of slowing down.

In the championship rounds, Golovkin got the better on Canelo in rounds ten and and eleven with GGG connecting a wicked right straight apparently putting Canelo in danger but the Mexican showed his great chin. In the final round however, Canelo, probably still seething in anger, gave it all to get the round to probably swing the fight to his favor.

At 36 years old, Golovkin probably begun to show signs of his age while Canelo, 28, is obviously at the very peak of his career.

Golovkin's first defeat denied him to set the most title defenses in the middleweight division. He is currently tied with Bernard Hopkins with the longest successful title defenses in the 160-pound division at 20.
