SGG PROMOTIONS LINES UP TWO MAJOR BOXING EVENTS IN 2008
Pe?alosa, Larios To Headline Feb. Card As World Cup III is Set in May

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY -- SGG Promotions president Sammy Gello-ani has announced two major boxing events in the first half of 2008 during a press conference at the Cebu Grand Hotel yesterday.

Gello-ani said that SGG Promotions, in partnership with Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, will headline WBO bantamweight champ Gerry Pe?alosa in a February, 2008 card at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City with no less than former world champion Oscar 'Chololo' Larios of Mexico fighting in the main undercard. Opponents of Pe?alosa and Larios will still be selected and will be announced later, according to Gello-ani.

On May, 2008, a third edition of the Boxing World Cup will be stage at the Araneta Coliseum with the Philippines defending the Cup against a Latin American country. Final selection of the opponent country as well as the boxers who will fight in the World Cup are still being worked out by international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz, according to Gello-ani.

Pe?alosa, who had earlier wanted to face Daniel Ponce de Leon in a rematch, was ordered by the WBO to defend his title against mandatory challenger Retanachai Sor Vorapin of Thailand. Gello-ani, however, said that they are still negotiating with the WBO and other parties for Pe?alosa's next opponent and according to Gello-ani, the situation will become clear in the next few days.

Oscar Larios, who made a gallant stand before losing a 12-round unanimous decision against Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao during their July, 2006 fight at the Araneta Coliseum, has decided to make a comeback fight in the Philippines. Larios attended the recent WBC Convention in Manila and was surprised to see how popular he was in the Philippines as he was getting mobbed by people wherever he goes.

Speaking to his interpreter, Larios told PhilBoxing.com earlier how touched he was with the reception he was getting and would like to give something back to the Filipino people by fighting in the Philippines again.

Regarding the World Cup, Gello-ani said that they already have an initial line up of boxers fighting in the World Cup both for the defending champion Philippines and a prospective opponent country but a final line-up will be drawn in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Gello-ani also announced that Bert Batawang and trainer Jeremiah Quijano will leave for Mexico via Los Angeles on Dec. 3 for Batawang's date with IBF World lightfly champ Ulises Solis in Guadalajara, Mexico. Batawang declared readiness to face Solis and said that he will go for a knockout to take home Solis' belt to the Philippines.
