Elordes Top Filipino Delegates in WBC Convention By Alex P. Vidal PhilBoxing.com Tue, 20 Nov 2007 Now it can be told. The fabled Elorde family was among the top delegates from the Philippines in terms of attendance and participation in sessions during the recent week-long 45th World Boxing Council (WBC) convention in Manila Hotel. Led by brothers Gabriel ?Bebot?, Johnny and his wife Liza and the matriarch Laura, wife of the late Gabriel ?Flash? Sr., the Elordes, and Jun Sarreal, made their presence felt even during the gala night in Intramuros in full force and during the meetings of the WBC Board of Governors in the convention hall. The Elordes, WBC originals since way back in the early 70?s, were the most visible Filipino boxing clan even during the conclusion of the conclave spiked by a slambang card at the San Andres Sports Complex, San Andres, Manila where Gabriel?s war, Juanito Rubillar successfully kept his Orient Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) junior flyweight title for the third time against Korean challenger Beung Ju Lee with a fifth round stoppage in the ?Tapatan sa Maynila? (?Match-Up in Manila?) card. They were also the most recognized among the galaxy of stars in the crowd. Delegates from Japan, Australia and Mexico approached their table to greet and shake hands with them everytime they saw them, observed promoter Perry Clavel. The Elordes also came literally in a truckload when their most favorite icon, Bai, scored a scary 4-round majority decision win over Glen Mondol Nov. 14 in a boxing card at the Mall of Asia assembled by MP Promotion and Rex ?Wakee? Salud International as side event of the WBC convention. ?They are almost everywhere and they really love boxing,? observed a Japanese boxing manager from Kanazawa, Japan who is a long-time associate of the Elordes. Accompanying the boxing clan were former world champions Rene Barrientos and Rolando Navarette who were both feted by WBC president Jose Sulaiman Chagnon in the gala night in Intramuros Nov. 12. Their late patriarch, Gabriel ?Flash? Jr. is acknowledged as the greatest Filipino world junior lightweight champion and is considered as inspiration by the WBC, said Sulaiman.
