NBA -- Spurs thwart Thunder, 103-99

PhilBoxing.com

SAN ANTONIO -- The Spurs overcame an early deficit to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-99 in a home match-up on Thursday night (Friday morning Manila time) with significant playoff implications. The sellout crowd of 18,418 was raucous and it had all the makings of a playoff game. The thought is not a stretch as there is a chance these two teams will meet as the seedings in the West are as unpredictable ever.

San Antonio was down by as many as 7 points, with Oklahoma City leading 29-24 at the end of the first quarter. The Thunder started quickly out of the gate, hitting 5 of their first 7 attempts behind the arc. The Spurs regrouped, going on a 9-0 run to take the lead in the first 2 minutes of the second quarter.

The Spurs maintained that lead through the half, when the Thunder punched back and managed to outscore their opponents 25-18 in the third quarter to retake the lead. All in all, the game had 10 lead changes and 7 ties.

The Thunder were only down by 1 with 1:07 to play. Paul George contributed 6 points in that final minute to keep the game?s outcome in question. They ultimately came up short with reigning MVP Russell Westbrook missing two 3 pointers in the closing minutes.

San Antonio continued to lean on forward All Star LaMarcus Aldridge in the continued absence of Kawhi Leonard, who notched a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Patty Mills had 14 points, including a 3 pointer late in the fourth that helped seal the Spurs? victory.

Oklahoma City had four starters score in double figures, led by George, who had 26 points and 7 rebounds. Westbrook was just 3 assists shy of a triple double and had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Starting the game at 6th place in the Western Conference, the Spurs moved up to 4th, overtaking the Thunder. Oklahoma City returns home on Friday night to face the Denver Nuggets. San Antonio next faces the Houston Rockets on Sunday afternoon.
