DE LA HOYA ALL-TIME LEADER IN PAY-PER-VIEW

The great Oscar De La Hoya, one of the most charismatic fighters of all-time has set a new record as the all-time leader in pay-per-view sales after HBO announced that the May 5 superfight against Floyd Mayweather Jr did even better than initially thought.

HBO disclosed that the final numbers reached an astonishing 2.4 million buys and $134.4 million in domestic revenue in the US alone. The latest figures jacked up De La Hoya?s total sales to an amazing 12.8 million buys.

Aside from shattering existing records for the most number of PPV buys for a non-heavyweight bout, the battle between ?The Golden Boy? and ?Pretty Boy? smashed the previous leader in PPV buys which was the 1.9 million in the Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson rematch in 1997.

The magnitude of De La Hoya?s drawing power can be gauged by the fact that the combined PPV buys of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao?s epic trilogy with Erik ?El Terrible? Morales (1.05 million) was less than 50 percent of the De La Hoya-Mayweather title fight, ?The World Awaits.?
