ABAP CENTRAL VISAYAS MEETS WITH CEBU OPEN BOXING STAKEHOLDERS By Felman Gingoyon PhilBoxing.com Sat, 13 May 2017 Revered Cebuano sportsman Lorenzo "Chao" Sy, ABAP Central Visayas coordinator together with PSC region 7 met with representatives of different boxing clubs and sports commissions in Cebu at the PSC office in Cebu City Sports Complex yesterday. A consultative meeting and roundtable discussion was conducted with regards to the upcoming Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines- Philippine Sports Commission (ABAP-PSC) tournament and some matters affecting local open boxing. A junior boys, aged 15 to 16 years old tournament will be staged at the boxing gym of the CCSC on the 17th. This will also serve as try-outs as coaches from the national team will also be on hand to scout potential boxers that can represent the country in international tournaments like AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships, the last of such was held in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2015. Weigh-in is scheduled from 7 to 9:30 am, technical officials meeting at 1 pm and tournament proper at around 2 pm. Weight categories to be contested will be from 44 to 66 kgs."ABAP is not only interested to those who will win but also those who have the skills and potential", stressed Sy. Among the topics raised during the discussions were aimed towards the safe conduct of the sport and the lack of accredited ABAP boxing officials including medical personnel in Cebu. Others also pointed on the lack of local boxing tournaments which can also serve as a venue to develop and discover grassroots talents and the non-existent support of some local government units. These concerns may further be addressed as Chao Sy stated that Mr. Ed Piscon, executive director of ABAP is expected to grace the event in the coming days. The popularity of girl's boxing has also been noticed and the tournament may feature the ladies in exhibition matches. Sy, also the Visayas coordinator for PSC under the Philippine Sports Institute also revealed that there are plans to make Cebu a training facility for national team boxers. He further stated that same boxing tournament will likely take place every three months. (felman gingoyon) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Felman Gingoyon. |
