Mercito Gesta triumphs in return against Gilberto Gonzalez in Vegas
By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 02 Apr 2017

After missing all of 2016 due to a shoulder injury, Mercito 'No Fear' Gesta returned Saturday night with a Unanimous Decision victory over Gilberto "El Flaco" Gonzalez of Mexico at The Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The San Diego based fighter out of Mandaue City in Cebu overcame a 3rd round knockdown to renew his stalled fighting career with scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 96-93 to improve his record to 30-1-2 (16 KOs) in a fight that was shown over ESPN in the United States.
Gesta who has been out of action for 17 months, dominated the first two rounds against the taller and rangy Gonzalez. He found his way early beyond his opponent's defenses with his jabs and combinations.
Gonzalez who was also coming from a long layoff (12 months) found his mark in the 3rd with a big uppercut that sent the Filipino to the floor.
Gesta recovered easily and engaged Gonzalez after the knockdown. He almost dropped the Mexican in the 4th and boxed beautifully to recover points from the previous round.
As a result of Gesta's combinations, a swelling in the left side of Gonzalez's face is evident in the first half of their 10 round lightweight fight. He was also bleeding profusely from his nose but that never stopped him from moving forward against a very active foe.
Tough and not backing up, Gonzalez, who has scored 22 knockouts in his previous 27 victories, scored another clean uppercut in the 7th but that did not send Gesta down unlike the 3rd.
Gesta boxed his way out of a danger against a rampaging and desperate foe in the last 3 rounds of the fight to register his first victory in his return to the ring while Gonzales dropped down to 27-4.
