Golovkin's KO Streak Ends with Arguable Decision Win Over Jacobs
By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 19 Mar 2017

Madison Square Garden - Everyone that trooped to 'The Mecca of Boxing' wanted to see a knockout ending to the middleweight showdown between Gennady Golovkin and Danny Jacobs Saturday night.
They did not get what they came for but was rewarded with a close battle between the two champions that ended in a close and arguable Unanimous Decision.
Golovkin outpointed Jacobs in 12 rounds to remain undefeated at 37-0 and retained his WBA, IBF and WBC belts in the process. Scores were 114-113, 115-112 and 115- 112.
Known for his knockout power, Golovkin's knockout streak of 23 came to an end as Jacobs, holder of the WBA's regular belt, pushed him to dig deeper and fight longer than what he's used to in his career.
Jacobs, who was dominated early and was down in the 4th, adjusted by mid-bout and found success in landing shots against the monster from Kazakhstan. His combos started landing in the 6th and Golovkin or better known as 'Triple G' was busy defending against the flurries instead of throwing his hard punches.
But Jacobs was unable to drop Golovkin despite his flurries, proving once again that Triple G can not only throw it but take big punches in return.
The Brooklyn toughie mixed effective boxing and effective punching which frustrated Golovkin in the second half of the fight but that wasn't enough to overcome the unified champ's early lead. A strong showing in the 8th and 9th sealed the win for the Kazakh despite losing the championship rounds in the cards.
"He did a very good job. I give him respect," Golovkin stated after the fight.
Golovkin threw more punches than Jacobs, 615 to 541 and also landed better with 231 as opposed to 175 from Jacobs who suffered lost Number 2 his 34-fights career.
"I think I won the fight. I think the fans support me," said Jacobs after.
Jacobs may not have won it and pulled the upset of the year but his stock was not hurt either after his strong showing.
A rematch maybe in the future between the two middleweight standouts.
