Srisaket Sor Rungvisai Upsets Pound for Pound King Roman Gonzalez with Majority Decision Win

PhilBoxing.com

New York - Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez is no longer undefeated. He can no longer boast that he's never been down in a fight. His status as the best boxer in the world is now in question. He is no longer the World Boxing Championship Super Flyweight champion.

Gonzalez lost a debatable Majority Decision to a former owner of his belt and a relatively unknown Thai fighter in Srisaket Sor Rungvisai at the Madison Square Garden Saturday night.

Sor Rungvisai surprised Gonzalez and the boxing world when he dropped Gonzales in the first round with a body shot. The reigning champ recovered and waged a battle that would set the tone of the fight for the next 11 rounds.

The two fighters then fought a back and forth battle with their fists which brought the crowd to life after a lackluster series of undercard fights prior to their bout.

A first of many head butts caused a cut near the right eye of Gonzalez in the third round and blood oozed immediately from it.

That was a big factor in the fight as the cut limited Gonzalez's vision. It was also a prime target for Rungvisai who seemed to be the stronger fighter in the early rounds.

Gonzalez out of Managua, Nicaragua, again suffered another head butt in the 4th and the 6th. Referee Steve Willis then decided to deduct a point from Rungvisai which nullified his early advantage.

Both fighters were very active in the course of 12 rounds, Gonzalez threw 1013 punches according to Compubox while Rungvisai threw 940.

Gonzalez who realized that he is facing the best opponent of his stellar career, aggressively brought the fight to Rungvisai despite blood flowing from his face. But the former Thai titleholder would not back down and answered every attack from Gonzalez. This unrelenting exchange of leather produced this year's front runner for Fight of The Year.

The crowd booed when Rungvisai was announced as the winner with an even 113-113 tally in one card and two winning scores of 114-112.

Gonzalez immediately left the ring after the fight while Rungvisai and his team celebrated on what is 2017's biggest upset in boxing.
