BRAVEHEART?S PONTERAS WINS RP FLYWEIGHT CROWN By Salvador Lopez PhilBoxing.com Wed, 08 Feb 2017 Ryan Rey Ponteras of the Braveheart Boxing Stable crowned himself as the new RP Flyweight Champion dethroning erstwhile champion Felipe Cagobcob Jr. of the Elorde Boxing Stable via a majority decision (116-112, 116-112, and 115-115) in the main event of the ?Bakbakan sa Candelaria Laban sa Droga? (?Slugfest in Candelaria Against Drugs?) held last Sunday at the LDB Sports Arena, Candelaria, Quezon. The bout was an all-out war with both boxers coming out swinging right from the get go and neither of the two protagonists was hiding their intention of going for the homerun. Cagobcob was effective in the early rounds scoring with clean blows to the head and had Ponteras hurt in the second round. Not to be outdone, Ponteras continued to stalk Cagobcob and proved to be more accurate with his punches as the fight progressed. Somewhere in the 9th round, Ponteras was caught with some huge punches and was momentarily in trouble but his strong stamina and high level of adrenaline surely helped him withstand the onslaught. It was rather unexpected, especially from the encouraging crowd that the fight between the two bloodied gladiators went to the distance. In the end, it was a deserved win for Ponteras. In the supporting main event, JR Francisco of the Hardstone Boxing Stable scored a mild upset by defeating previously world-ranked Romel Asenjo of the Braveheart Boxing Stable in their 10-round junior-flyweight bout via a unanimous decision (97-93, 97-93, 98-92). The knock-out conscious Asenjo was going for an early stoppage but paid dearly for it as the elusive Francisco not only withstood the former?s onslaught but soon established control of the bout with crisp and accurate punching to the head and body. Those punches soon clearly took their toll on Asenjo as he then resorted to excessive clinching toward the closing rounds of the bout just to survive till the final bell. Summarizing the results of the other bouts: Al Toyogon (Elorde Stable) scored a first round knock-down over Dexter Araya (Empire Boxing Gym) en route to a 6-round unanimous decision win (59-54, 59-54, and 57-56) in their featherweight fight. Dan Manosa (The Fitness Gym) defeated Jerome Roque (Elorde Stable) via majority decision (59-55, 58-56, and 57-57) in their 6-round in another featherweight bout. Jun Blazo (Elorde Boxing Stable) scored a 5th round knockdown over Ruben Traza en route to winnng via a unanimous decision (58-55, 60-54, and 60-53) in their fiercely contested super-flyweight bout which served as the evening?s curtain raiser for professional boxing. The professional boxing event promoted by Raffy Panagan and was sponsored by Macario Boongaling, Vice Mayor George ?Ogie? Suayan, and the mayor?s brother businessman Leodegario Boongaling as a major entertainment to the to town?s fiesta. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salvador Lopez. |
